About the Class

There's nothing quite like a great pair of jeans. Whether your goal is to achieve a comfortable, flattering fit or master the specialist techniques used in jeans construction, this four-week course will guide you through the process of making your own custom pair of jeans. Over four weekly sessions, you'll learn key jeans-making techniques including fitting, topstitching, zip insertion, pocket construction, waistband application and professional finishing methods. The course can be tailored to your individual goals. If your priority is achieving a well-fitting jeans pattern that you can use again and again, we can spend more time focusing on fitting and pattern adjustments. If your priority is learning construction techniques and completing a finished pair of jeans, we can focus more heavily on the sewing process. Please note that if your focus is fit, there may be a small amount of homework between classes. Achieving a great fit often requires testing adjustments, and depending on the alterations needed, you may need to make more than one toile before cutting into your final fabric. If fit is your main priority, we recommend making a toile before cutting into your chosen denim. A budget denim with a similar weight and stretch percentage to your final fabric works particularly well. For non-stretch jeans patterns, calico can also be used, although a cheaper denim will usually give a more accurate representation of the finished garment. Suitable Patterns Helene Jeans by Anna Allen (straight and wide leg options) Brook Jeans by Helens Closet (straight leg option) Ash Jeans by Megan Nielsen (stretch denim, slim, skinny, flare and wide leg options) Dawn Jeans by Megan Nielsen (skinny, straight and wide leg options) If you'd like to make a different jeans pattern, please get in touch before purchasing your supplies so we can check that it's suitable for the course and achievable within the timeframe. You'll need to bring: everything your selected pattern requires, plus fabric to toile if applicable Experience Level This is an intermediate-level course. You should be confident using a sewing machine independently and have experience following commercial sewing patterns and constructing garments. This course is not suitable for complete beginners.
