Is your sewing machine skipping stitches, jamming, or just not running as smoothly as it used to? Domestic sewing machine servicing

Whether you sew daily or your machine’s been tucked away in a cupboard for years, a regular service can help keep everything running smoothly. We clean, oil, test and inspect your machine to make sure it’s stitching beautifully again.

How much does a sewing machine service cost?

A standard service for a mechanical machine costs £70 and includes a thorough clean, oil and mechanical check. We’ll always let you know if your machine needs any replacement parts or extra work before we go ahead.

What we check during a service

When you bring your machine in for a service, we provide a thorough inspection to ensure everything is functioning properly. Our service includes:

  • A detailed internal cleaning and lubrication

  • Adjusting the stitch tension for smooth, even sewing

  • Calibrating feed dogs for proper fabric handling

  • Inspecting and adjusting the presser foot

  • Testing motor performance and power

  • Checking the needle bar and shuttle hook

  • Advice on replacing any worn or broken components

  • Running functional tests to ensure consistent performance

How often should a sewing machine be serviced?

If you sew regularly, aim to have your machine serviced once a year. Even if it hasn’t been used much, old grease can dry out over time and cause the internal mechanisms to seize. A service can prevent long-term damage and keep your machine in good health.

Sewing machine repairs

Is your sewing machine completely jammed or refusing to pick up the bobbin thread? One of the most common repair issues we see is timing problems, often caused when people try to pull out tangled thread too forcefully. This can knock the needle and hook out of sync — but don’t worry, it’s fixable! We’re experienced in adjusting and resetting machine timing so you can get back to sewing.

Is it worth repairing a sewing machine?

In most cases, yes. Many older machines are extremely well made and just need a bit of care to run like new again. We’ll always give you honest advice about whether it’s worth repairing your specific model.

What’s the most common sewing machine problem?

Aside from timing issues, we often see problems caused by incorrect threading, blunt needles, or a build-up of fluff and lint in the bobbin area. Many issues can be avoided with regular maintenance and gentle use.

What’s the average lifespan of a sewing machine?

A good sewing machine can last 20–30 years or more with proper care. Regular servicing is key to keeping it running reliably for decades.
