Sewing Classes & Workshops

Sewing classes Wrexham & Shropshire | Learn to sew in Wrexham & Shropshire | Best sewing classes | Woman-owned business

What types of sewing classes do you offer?
We offer a wide range of sewing and dressmaking classes suitable for all skill levels. These include beginner basics, pattern making, garment fitting classes, hand embroidery, crochet, stretch fabric sewing, zip techniques,  alterations and sew much more. We are continually adding new classes and workshops to our timetable to keep Ready Steady Sew an exciting place for our students to come. Our Whitchurch-based studio also runs one-day specialist workshops and project-led sessions — perfect if you're looking to learn to sew in a creative, supportive space.

What is the best age to learn sewing?
There's no perfect age to learn — we welcome teens and adults alike! Whether you're 14 or 74, our inclusive sewing classes in Whitchurch and Wrexham are designed to help anyone feel confident with a needle and thread.

Can you learn to sew as an adult?
Absolutely. Many of our students are complete beginners who start in adulthood. We break everything down into manageable steps, so you can learn to sew even if you've never touched a machine before.

How long does it take to learn how to sew professionally?
That depends on your goals! Our beginners usually feel confident after a few sessions, and we offer progressive classes so you can build your skills steadily. You can also take private lessons for more tailored, intensive learning.

Is getting into sewing expensive?
It doesn’t have to be. We help you choose affordable supplies and our Wrexham sewing classes  include the use of our sewing machines and equipment so you can try sewing before investing in tools of your own.

Do I need to bring my own sewing machine?
Not at all! We provide high-quality Janome sewing machines, overlockers, and even a coverstitch machine for class use. But if you’d rather bring your own, that’s absolutely fine too.

Do I need to buy materials for the class?
Some classes include materials, but most will require you to bring your own fabric and notions. You’ll find a full materials list on each booking page, and kits are also available in our online shop.

What should I wear to class?
Dress comfortably and avoid loose clothing or dangly accessories. Closed-toe shoes are recommended for safety. For pattern drafting and fitting classes, please wear leggings and a fitted vest top for accurate measurements, as well as a well fitting bra - no sports bras please.

Can I take private one-to-one sewing lessons?
Yes! We offer 1:1 sessions tailored to your needs — perfect for beginners or anyone looking to refine specific skills. Learn at your own pace with our expert tutors in a supportive studio environment.

Do I get to take home what I make in class?

Absolutely! Whether it’s a simple tote bag or a custom-fit garment, anything you make in class is yours to keep.

Sewing Machine Sales, Servicing & Repairs

Sewing machine service Wrexham & Shropshire | Sewing machine repair Whitchurch | Overlocker repair Wrexham & Shropshire | Sewing machines for sale Wrexham & Shropshire

How much should it cost to service a sewing machine?
Sewing machine servicing typically starts around £60, depending on the type of machine and what’s needed. We offer competitive pricing, a friendly reliable service and a quick turn around from our studio on the Wrexham and North Shropshire border.

Is it worth servicing a sewing machine?
Yes! Regular servicing extends the lifespan of your machine and ensures it runs smoothly. Even machines that haven’t been used for years benefit from a service — dried-out grease can cause internal mechanisms to seize, risking long-term damage.

How often should a sewing machine be serviced?
We recommend a service every 12–24 months, depending on usage. Machines used heavily or for frequent projects (like in classes or workshops) should be serviced annually. Machines in storage still benefit from occasional check-ups too.

Is it worth repairing a sewing machine?
In most cases, yes — especially if you have a solid mechanical or mid-range electronic machine. We’ll give you an honest assessment of whether a repair is cost-effective.

What is the most common sewing machine problem?
One of the most common issues we see is timing problems. These often occur when tangled thread are forcibly pulled from the machine, throwing the internal timing out and making the machine unusable.

What is the average lifespan of a sewing machine?
A well-maintained sewing machine can last 15–25 years or more. Some machines from the 1970s and 1980s are still going strong thanks to regular servicing and proper use. We often service machines from this era and our technician always comments on how well made they are!

Do you repair and service overlockers?
Yes! We offer overlocker repair and overlocker servicing in Wrexham, Whitchurch and surrounding areas. Check out our page on servicing for pricing or to book your machine in.

Do you sell sewing machines or overlockers?
We stock a curated selection of Janome sewing machines and overlockers for sale in Whitchurch, Wrexham. Whether you’re looking for your first machine or a professional upgrade, we can help you find the right model. Get in touch with us today if you'd like to book a sewing machine demo.

What is the best sewing machine to buy in the UK?
Janome and Brother are two of the most reliable brands. For beginners, the Janome 725S is a popular choice but our favourite has to be the Janome 230DC which is our studio machine. As for overlockers we love both the Janome AT2000D (an over locker that threads itself - air threader!) and the Janone Mylock 454D which is our studio overlocker. We’re happy to advise you based on your sewing goals.

Is Janome or Brother better?
Both brands are excellent. Janome machines are known for durability and ease of use, while Brother models often include more built-in stitches at a similar price point. It really depends on your preferences! Our studio favourite is Janome and that's what we use in all our classes.

Yes. We have a wide entrance, short ramp and a ground floor classroom. If you require accessible accommodation, please contact us before booking so we can ensure your class is held downstairs.

How do I book a class?
Booking is easy — just visit the Book Online page, select your class, and follow the steps. If you have questions, email us or use the contact form and we’ll be happy to help.

What if I arrive late to class?
We recommend arriving 10 minutes early to get settled. Late arrivals may miss key instructions and disrupt the class. Please don’t arrive more than 15 minutes early, as we may be teaching or on a break between classes.

What happens if I need to cancel my class?
If you cancel at least 14 working days in advance, you’ll receive a full refund. Cancellations after that will incur a fee, and no-shows are non-refundable. Full details are in our Cancellation Policy.

Can I transfer to another class if I can’t attend?
Transfers are possible with 14 days’ notice. After that, we’re unable to move bookings as we won’t have time to refill your spot. As a small business, every booking matters — please check your availability before confirming.

What if I don’t like the class or feel it’s not for me?
We can’t offer refunds for classes that are partially attended or not completed. We suggest trying one of our shorter sessions first if you're unsure — it’s a great way to experience the studio and teaching style.

Do you offer gift vouchers?
Yes! You can buy gift vouchers directly through our website — perfect for birthdays, holidays, or encouraging someone to start their sewing journey.

What if my sewing machine isn’t working in class?
We’ve got you covered with loan machines. We also offer sewing machine servicing and repairs — find full details on our Servicing & Repairs page.

What payment methods do you accept for servicing and repairs?
Card payment upon collection for sewing machine servicing and repair work.

Do you offer group bookings or private parties?

Yes! We can arrange private sewing parties or group workshops for birthdays, hen dos, team-building or just a fun day out. Contact us to discuss options and pricing.

Do you sell fabric and notions?

While we don’t operate a full fabric shop (yet!), we do stock a small range of curated sewing kits, tools, and essential notions. You can browse these in our studio or online shop.
