About the Class

Sewing your own denim jacket is a rewarding project, but it’s one that many people feel unsure about tackling on their own. Working with heavier fabrics, topstitching and structured garment details can feel daunting if you’ve never done it before. In this hands-on workshop we’ll guide you through the process step by step so you can confidently sew your own jacket. We will be using the I AM Patterns Gold Jacket, a modern take on the classic denim jacket. The pattern includes 18 different variations, allowing you to customise details such as the collar, pockets, cuffs and length so you can really make it your own. What You’ll Learn • Work with denim and other heavier fabrics • Sew patch pockets and pocket flaps • Construct a collar and collar stand • Sew cuffs and plackets • Set sleeves into a jacket • Sew strong seams suitable for structured garments • Topstitch neatly for a professional finish • Build confidence sewing more complex garments These are transferable skills you can use for future jacket and outerwear projects. What’s Included You’ll have full use of our fully equipped sewing studio including: • Sewing machines • Overlockers • Large tables and work space • Pressing stations What to Bring • Your printed I AM Patterns Gold Jacket pattern • Denim or another medium to heavy weight fabric suitable for a jacket • Matching thread (topstitching thread optional) • Jeans buttons for your jacket To get the most out of the workshop we recommend cutting out your fabric at home before the class so you can focus on the sewing techniques during the session. If you would prefer not to cut out at home, you are welcome to rent one of our cutting tables at the studio before the workshop. This workshop is ideal if you: • Are confident using a sewing machine • Have experience sewing garments and following commercial sewing patterns • Would like guidance sewing structured garments and heavier fabrics • Want to build your confidence working with denim and on techniques such as collars and topstitching This workshop is suitable for intermediate dressmakers who are comfortable sewing garments and are ready to develop their skills further. Please Note Everyone sews at a different pace. You may or may not finish your jacket during the workshop, but you’ll leave with the skills and confidence to complete it at home.
