About the Class
Learn to sew your own clothes and build a handmade wardrobe you’ll actually want to wear. This structured beginners dressmaking course has been designed to take you from complete beginner to confident dressmaker through a series of guided garment projects that gradually build your skills week by week. Rather than making random projects with no real progression, each garment has been carefully chosen to teach you new techniques while reinforcing everything you’ve already learned. As the course progresses, the sewing becomes more advanced naturally, helping you gain confidence without feeling overwhelmed. Throughout the course you’ll learn how to use sewing patterns, cut fabric accurately, understand garment construction and sew neat, professional finishes, all while creating clothes in your own size. You’ll also build your own dressmaking reference folder filled with samples, notes and technique swatches from every class, creating a personalised sewing manual you can keep and refer back to long after the course has finished. All projects use exclusive Ready Steady Sew sewing patterns created especially for this course and not available anywhere else. Each garment also includes customisation options so you can really make it your own, with options such as different necklines, skirt lengths, leg styles and design details depending on the project. How The Course Works The full course includes 6 garment projects across 2 levels (this page is for level 1) Each project is booked separately, so you complete one garment before moving on. We recommend starting with Project 1 and working through all 6 in order, as each stage builds on the last and together they form a complete capsule wardrobe Level 1 projects run over: 4 weekly 2hr classes or 1 full day All garments are made in your own size, allowing you to gradually build a handmade capsule wardrobe while developing real dressmaking skills. Level 1 Projects include a boxy top (1), elasticated trousers (2) and an A-line skirt (3). A sample of skills you'll learn include how to take your measurements and choose the right size, French seams, flatfell seams, different pocket styles, sleeves, hems, adding elastic, waistbands and sew much more! All classes are mixed project classes, so students may be working on Projects 1, 2 or 3. Simply book the next Level 1 class that suits you and continue onto your next project. Please add your project number in the booking notes. New students will start on Project 1.
