About the Class

Ever wanted to design your own trousers but don’t know where to start? In this four-week pattern cutting class, you’ll learn how to draft your own loose-fitting trouser block and then use it as the starting point for creating your own trouser designs. We’ll start by drafting a simple, loose-fitting trouser block. We’ve chosen a relaxed fit as the starting point because it’s more straightforward to fit than a traditional close-fitting trouser block, making it a great foundation for experimenting with different designs. Once your block is drafted and fitted, we’ll move on to pattern cutting techniques. You’ll learn how to create different pocket styles, waistbands and leg shapes, and how to use these techniques to develop your own designs. You can either design your own trousers from scratch or choose from a selection of ready-made designs and use the techniques you’ve learnt to draft your chosen style. What you’ll cover Across the four weeks, we’ll work through: Drafting your own loose-fitting trouser block Making a toile and learning how to assess the fit Making adjustments to your block where needed Pattern cutting techniques for different pocket styles Drafting different waistband styles Developing different leg shapes and styles Using pattern cutting techniques to create your own trouser designs Drafting your final trouser pattern How the four weeks will work Week 1 – Drafting your trouser block We’ll take your measurements and use them to draft your own loose-fitting trouser block from scratch. Week 2 – Fitting your block We’ll make a toile of your block and look at how it fits. You’ll learn how to identify any adjustments needed and transfer those changes back to your pattern. Week 3 – Pattern cutting & design We’ll start exploring different pattern cutting techniques, including pocket, waistband and leg variations. You can begin developing your own trouser design or choose from our selection of ready-made designs. Week 4 – Drafting your trousers You’ll use your chosen design and the techniques you’ve learnt to draft your final trouser pattern. This class is aimed at sewists who already have some sewing experience and want to develop their pattern cutting skills. It’s not a beginner sewing class, and you’ll need to be comfortable using a sewing machine and with basic sewing techniques. You don’t need previous pattern cutting experience. Please bring fabric for toiles, sharp pencils, rulers (pattern master is best)
