About the Class

Learn to sew your own clothes and build a handmade wardrobe you’ll actually want to wear. This structured dressmaking course is suitable for all skill levels, from complete beginners to sewists with experience who want to develop their skills and create a handmade capsule wardrobe. Each garment project teaches new techniques while reinforcing your existing skills. Beginners can build their confidence step by step, while more experienced sewists can choose projects that suit their abilities and learn new techniques along the way. Throughout the course you’ll learn how to use sewing patterns, cut fabric accurately, understand garment construction and sew neat, professional finishes, all while creating clothes in your own size. All projects use exclusive Ready Steady Sew sewing patterns created especially for this course and not available anywhere else. Included in the course cost is a printed and PDF version of the pattern. Each garment also includes customisation options so you can really make it your own, with options such as different necklines, skirt lengths, leg styles and design details depending on the project. How The Course Works The full course includes 6 garment projects. Each project is booked separately, so you can complete one garment before moving on. If you’re a beginner, we recommend starting with Project 1 and working through all 6 in order, as each stage builds on the last. If you’ve made clothes before, you can choose any project to suit your skills and interests. Projects include a boxy top (1), everyday trousers (2), wrap skirt (3), shift dress (4), tailored trousers (5) and blouse (6). Skills include taking measurements and choosing the right size, French seams, flat-felled seams, different pocket styles, sleeves, hems, adding elastic, waistbands, zips, bias bound seams and much more! All classes are mixed project classes, so students may be working on Projects 1 through 6. Simply book the next Capsule Wardrobe class that suits you and continue with your chosen project. Please add your project number in the booking notes. New beginners should start with Project 1. Bring your own sewing machine or use a studio machine. Please bring a sewing kit including fabric scissors, unpicker, tape measure, pins and fabric markers, all available in our shop. A list of what you need for each project can be found in the images on this page or grab one of our sewing kits.
